Spiritual Laws

When the act of reflection takes place in the mind, when we look at ourselves in the light of thought, we discover that our life is embosomed in beauty. Behind us, as we go, all things assume pleasing forms, as clouds do far off. Not only things familiar and stale, but even the tragic and terrible, are comely, as they take their place in the pictures of memory. The river-bank, the weed at the water-side, the old house, the foolish person, -- however neglected in the passing, -- have a grace in the past. Even the corpse that has lain in the chambers has added a solemn ornament to the house. The soul will not know either deformity or pain. If, in the hours of clear reason, we should speak the severest truth, we should say, that we had never made a sacrifice. In these hours the mind seems so great, that nothing can be taken from us that seems much. All loss, all pain, is particular; the universe remains to the heart unhurt. Neither vexations nor calamities abate our trust. No man ever stated his griefs as lightly as he might. Allow for exaggeration in the most patient and sorely ridden hack that ever was driven. For it is only the finite that has wrought and suffered; the infinite lies stretched in smiling repose. -RWE

Oil spill

I really hope they fix the leak soon. It's been WAY too long. When the news started showing animals covered in oil, I couldn't bare to watch it. Every second of the day tons of oil is flowing out all over the Gulf. It's sad and ridiculous that we are able to find oil thousands of feet underwater but can't fix a leak. I know it's not that easy but there is no time to point the blame cause it's not changing anything and second by second things are getting worse.

World Cup!

I don't understand why most Americans seem to have a disdain for soccer. Oh well, that doesn't make me love it any less! The first few days of play have been pretty fun to watch. I'm so glad England didn't beat us. Now we just need to win the next 2 games so we can advance! I wish I could live stream games at work.

This past weekend was eventful.

  • Katie graduated.

  • Free Spicy Chicken sandwich from Chick-fil-A.

  • Went out and danced!

  • Went to the driving range and actually did well.

  • Got a new book-God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens.

  • Went fishing for the first time ever! Pathetic, I know. I caught 2 delicious bass :). And gave them back to the pond.

I am old

I went out with Sherrie and Karisa last night. We went to Cyclones and then Sue's. I got a margarita at the restaurant which made me drunk..that's the first time that's ever happened from one frozen drink. (that's probably untrue but we'll go with it for the story's sake) Upon getting the bill and seeing that it was $14 for one drink, I realized that I was very thankful it intoxicated me or I'd have been pissed! :) We went to Sue's after and I shouldn't have had another drink at all but I had two cause I don't know my alcoholic boundaries aka I'm dumb.

My reasoning for saying all this is that I need to get it through my head that I am a bad drinker. Firstly, I spend way** too much money cause the second I get tipsy I feel the need to buy everyone a drink. The next day I always cringe when I see my account. Secondly, like I said, I get drunk and then think it will "wear off" in five minutes so I drink too excess and then feel like shit the whole next day. That may be okay on the weekends when you have a day of detox to just lay around and complain, but when you have to go to work at 7:30 the next morning..it's not fun. That is my case for today! Yay! And I'm sure this story will be on repeat Saturday, too.

On the bright side, Reice is bringing me Tons for lunch so that should make things better :).

Excerpt from "The God Delusion"

Why is God considered an explanation for anything? It's not- it's a failure to explain, a shrug of the shoulders, an 'I dunno' dressed up in spirituality and ritual. If someone credits something to God, generally what it means is that they haven't a clue, so they're attributing it to an unreachable, unknowable sky-fairy. Ask for an explanation of where that bloke came from, and odds are you'll get a vague, pseudo-philisophical reply about having always existed, or being outside nature. Which, of course, explains nothing.

Possibly my favorite read thus far.

The trip

was good. Angela seemed to really enjoy it. We did everything on the list except the Great Sand Dunes. We decided against a 9 hour round-trip and just spread our activities out. I'm glad to be home though. There's something about coming home to your own bed that's better than any other place you find yourself at night. (most of the time ha!) Angela went into work today and found out she is leaving to go to Nashville at 4. She will be there 'til Thursday. I hope she enjoys seeing another new place for the first time even if it is just to work.
Work's been good today and I'm off in a little while! Then dinner at Lindsey and Lauren's yum :).
